Women and Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects us all. One woman out of seven will be diagnosed with the disease. She could be someone you know —your cousin, your neighbor or your mom’s best friend. She will be one of hundreds of thousands of people fighting this disease.

Breast Health Awareness The causes of breast cancer are not fully understood. Because no one knows exactly what causes breast cancer, there are no sure ways to prevent it. But there are steps that every woman can take that may make developing breast cancer less likely. These include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and limiting the amount of alcohol you drink. Leading a healthy lifestyle will not eliminate your chance of getting breast cancer, but can help reduce your risk. For high-risk women, the antiestrogen drug tamoxifen can also help to reduce the risk of developing breast.

Take Care of Yourself and Stay Aware Numerous studies have shown that early detection of breast cancer saves lives and increases treatment options. The decline in breast cancer deaths seen in the past few years have been attributed, in large part, to the use of regular screening mammography. So be sure to get your mammogram every year if you’re 40. Thanks to early detection, the five-year survival rate for women whose cancers are diagnosed at an early stage is over 98%.

Call 800.511.2300 for the State of California Cancer Detection Program “Every Woman Counts”, if you are a woman 50 and older to see if you qualify for a free breast exam and mammogram.
